![]() Let’s face it, community service possibilities are everywhere but it can be hard to find an organization or association that interests young people. On Friday, January 29, 2016 our Collinwood DoMore4:Good team gathered at The Cleveland Food Bank to sort and pack the food donations. The volunteer event was led by Collinwood’s Track & Field Coach, Mr. Lewis, who has committed to DoMore4:Good in the Collinwood neighborhood. Many of the student volunteers were Track & Field team members. DM4G’s youth volunteered along with retired physicians from Solon, Ohio. Our students enjoyed meeting new people, while completing their volunteer hours. DM4G’s youth re-packed bulk food products and assembled “Snack Meals” for children who are at risk of hunger. Our students packed over 1200 brown bag lunches in under one hour.DM4G’s students were excited to learn that the snack meals and bagged lunches were going to be distributed to local after school programs and delivered to senior citizens in the Greater Cleveland area.
The Greater Cleveland Food Bank works to ensure that everyone in our communities has the nutritious food they need every day. As the central clearinghouse for donated and rescued food, the Food Bank solicits, collects, sorts, and distributes nonperishable food, fresh produce, perishable and frozen food, and prepared meals to local hunger centers and other nonprofit agencies. Reflections from Students From this experience I learned how to work as a team member and communicate with others whom I wasn’t familiar with. Working together increased the number of lunches that we were able to pack and our assembly line made the job a lot easier. –Quionne The fact that the food would be distributed to those who needed it most filled me with joy knowing that I participated in building a stronger Cleveland. -Iyanna
